Mechanical Design Engineer, Tesla Bot

About the Role

Tesla’s Robotics Team is on the forefront of designing humanoid bi-pedal robots (Tesla Bot) to handle tasks that are boring, repetitive, or dangerous for humans. This role involves contributing to a multidisciplinary team encompassing mechanical, electrical, controls, software, and manufacturing engineering. As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you'll play a critical role in bringing Tesla’s ambitious vision to life by solving complex mechanical design challenges with creativity and technical rigor.

Responsibilities

• Design joints and structures optimized for mass, stiffness, cost, and manufacturing.
• Create mechanisms and transmissions for efficient power transfer through moving joints.
• Perform load calculations to size actuators, transmissions, and bearing elements.
• Integrate actuators, sensors, and electronics, ensuring space-efficient packaging and ease of assembly/serviceability.
• Use analytical methods, including calculations and simulations, for design and optimization.
• Conduct tolerance analysis to assess assembly fits and backlash impacts.
• Rapidly iterate and fabricate prototypes, advancing concepts to volume production.
• Manage suppliers to ensure designs meet specifications and timelines.
• Develop specifications and accelerated test plans to validate product lifecycles.
• Design fixtures and equipment for testing and calibration in prototype and production environments.

Requirements

• Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics, or equivalent industry experience.
• Proficiency in 3D modeling software (CATIA preferred).
• Experience drafting engineering drawings and conducting tolerance stack-up analysis (GD&T is a bonus).
• Strong communication skills and ability to thrive in a fast-paced, challenging environment.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary Range: $88,000 - $228,000 annually
Includes cash and stock awards, plus benefits.
